Due to the kept "o" it is possible that the persons in Franconia, who lived in the "karolingischer" time are of   Saxonian- Frisian origin (displacement about 800).  Otherwise the name would be Hruodmar/Ruodmar>Rudmar>Rumer.

The family name Romer is of a charateristic origin. According to investigations it is derived from the Germand language and show deep religiousness. In the middle age Romer or Römer were called such ones who undertook a pilgrimage to the Holy City Rome. Such pilgrimage was very difficult and dangerous as it could only be done on foot, by horeses or donkeys and who arrived back home safely enjoyed high acknowledgement. Therefore in many cases the descendants take over the first merely epithet Romer as family name.
