The Third World Shop in Erlangen was founded in 1981. All staff are volunteers.
Their aim is to give information about the situation in the countries of
the so-called third world, or the underdeveloped countries to make people
realise the destructive political and economical conditions and to help
improve circumstances and initiate political changes. For these reasons
the Third World Shop is engaged in a variety of information and selling
opportunities.
Our Third World Shop supports self-help projects in some third world countries.
The mainstay is selling goods from third world communities, self-help groups and partially from governmental trade organisations. The Third World Shop buys as directly as possible, so that the producers can earn a little bit more compared to the normal, economically oriented trade.
Our Third World Shop is permanently looking for new members who want to engage with the political, economical or practical work.
The objective of the "fair trade" activities of our Third World Shop is,
by creating jobs and promoting fair trade, to help producers in developing
countries achieve independence. What is more, in collaboration with producers
and their co-operations in the world, we promote organic farming to protect
health of "consumers, producers, and the Earth". Also many of our foreign
trade partners are actively involved in social activities such as environmental
protection, welfare, medicare, education, enhancement of women's status,
and succession of cultures in their respective countries.
In supplement such support, since ordinary transactions are insufficient, we set up the "Third World Shop" to pool a portion of our sales profit, personal donations, and subsidies so that we may reinforce our co-operation for social activities. As for our activities in Germany, we introduce various cultures of producers' countries through events such as concerts, school education and exchange of cultures by way of visits to and from the producers.
At the initial stage, many of the collaborative programmes under the "Third World Shop" were one-shot programmes but, in the recent few years, we have started long-term programmes focusing on "community development". We view the world, not by nations but by regions and, through contribution to resolution of regional problems, we intend to contribute something towards the resolution of global problems.
Our Third World Shop has reached the scale of approximately 80 members
and 40 active collaborators. The responsibilities of the association are
divided between different groups :
All of our products come from the fair trade with Asia, Africa and South America. Most of them are cultivated with biological rules.
